Upcoming Arrival: Electric MPV by Volvo – The EM90 Expected to Roll Out in Late 2023

The United Kingdom has bid farewell to the Volvo estate, and the absence of people carriers, also known as MPVs, has been noticeable for quite some time. However, there’s a glimmer of hope for those who appreciate non-SUV body styles, as Volvo seems to be making a comeback in the MPV segment with an upcoming electric model called the Volvo EM90.

This vehicle is being touted as not only Volvo’s inaugural fully electric premium MPV, but actually the company’s very first venture into the MPV market. The grand unveiling of the EM90 is scheduled for November 12. Unfortunately, there’s a catch – it’s unlikely that this model will be gracing the roads of the UK.

Instead, the spotlight is aimed primarily at the Chinese market, where large people-moving vehicles still command substantial demand. On the day of the EM90’s launch, interested buyers in China will be able to place their orders. Volvo is proudly branding the EM90 as a “Scandinavian living room on the move,” hinting at a comfortable and luxurious interior experience.

The solitary teaser image offered to the public suggests a vehicle of opulence. Gazing through the panoramic glass roof reveals two separate seats in the middle row, a deviation from the common bench setup intended to accommodate as many passengers, particularly children, as possible. Notably, the positioning of rear door handles alongside the front ones implies that the EM90 might feature traditional sliding doors, designed for convenient ingress and egress.

In a departure from the traditional design of MPVs, the EM90 boasts a proper bonnet rather than the familiar sloping nose. This could potentially create space for a compact front trunk, commonly referred to as a “frunk,” enhancing the vehicle’s storage capacity. The teaser image showcases several stylistic cues consistent with Volvo’s design language, including an appealing gold exterior finish.

Although Volvo has kept technical specifications under wraps for now, experts speculate that the EM90 might share some technology with the new EX90 electric SUV. This could potentially encompass a dual-motor powertrain generating 402 horsepower, matched with a sizable 111kWh battery pack that likely provides a mid-range electric driving distance of around 300 miles. Rapid charging capabilities are also anticipated, with similarities to the EX90’s ability to achieve 80% charge within approximately 30 minutes.

For fans of practical and spacious family-oriented vehicles, the EM90’s emergence elicits mixed emotions. While the prospect of its availability in the UK remains uncertain, mirroring the EX90’s pricing, it’s reasonable to assume the EM90 could cost close to £100,000. Therefore, holding onto one’s current family vehicle might be a wise decision for the time being, despite its wear and tear.
