Adaptive chassis from ZF Sachs benefits Saab 9-5

ZF is claiming a hand in the Saab 9-5's driving dynamics, thanks to the company's electronic damping system, CDC (Continuous Damping Control) being used in the car.

Adaptive chassis from ZF Sachs benefits Saab 9 5CDC is offered as an optional feature by Saab under the name Drive Sense. It not only improves the handling of the new Saab 9-5 but also offers a plus in terms of safety – especially in extreme situations.

With Saab Drive Sense, sensors constantly record data on road condition, speed, and steering behavior. From this information, the electronic system computes the correct damping force within split seconds. The new Saab 9-5 therefore offers a highly comfortable chassis setup that ensures that frequent and long-distance drivers arrive relaxed at their destination. Furthermore, the fast calculation and implementation of the ideal damping force generates considerable safety reserves.

The electronics system streamlines the characteristic curves, allowing for precise handling in critical situations when vehicle stability reaches its limits during spontaneous evasion maneuvers. The driver can set the suspension to his personal preferences in three different stages via a rotary knob next to the gear shift. In addition to the default 'intelligent' mode, two further settings, 'sport' and 'comfort', can be selected.

In real time, 'intelligent' mode adjusts the car's handling characteristics in response to the driving style. It continually varies the stiffness rates of the electronically-controlled dampers, the action of the electronic throttle and the degree of power steering assistance.

In the standard driveline, a DMF and a clutch from ZF Sachs will be integrated for all engine versions. Owing to its effective torsional damping characteristics, the DMF (dual-mass flywheel) enables vibration-free driving even with very low engine speeds which also saves fuel. Moreover, the DMS goes easy on the transmission because of its effective vibration decoupling.
