Steering combines torque and angle overlay
01/11/2007 Email to a friend   Comment on this article
Japan’s JTEKT Corporation is developing a differential active front steering system that controls both torque overlay – what the driver feels – and steering angle, writes Roger Bishop. Current active designs in European cars offer either but not both.

The JTEKT technology uses two independently controlled brushless DC motors mounted on the steering column and working through an epicyclic gearbox. Power assist can be either hydraulic or electric, in the latter case by a third electric motor mounted on the steering rack.

Development engineers say the system is exceptionally quiet with low frictional losses. When no angle or torque overlay is called for, the there is no motion of the motors or gears.
