TPEs for vibration damping
01/11/2007 Email to a friend   Comment on this article
Two new grades of Zeon thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) have been developed to give specific properties useful to automotive engineers.

Zeotherm 100-60B has been formulated to give parts improved vibration dampening and a rubber-like flexibility (Shore A value of 62) while maintaining a sustained heat resistance to 150ºC with repeated excursions to 175ºC.

OEMs and suppliers are considering the material for charge air cooler mounts and steering column firewall seals. Other components might include isolator cuffs on turbo-diesel air intake ducts where thermosets are currently used.

The material is optimised for injection moulding and can be overmoulded or welded to polyamide.

A material designated 131-90B is a heat-stabilised blow moulding grade. It has the high heat resistance of 100-60B but it softens at 190ºC. It has a lower flexural modulus, making it more flexible than soft polyamides and copolyesters, and is formulated for uses where sealing, vibration isolation and/or installation force requirements are critical.
