PA46 targets underbonnet applications

A high performance grade of PA46 has been formulated especially for under-the-bonnet applications. Stanyl Diablo OCD2100 is said to extend the functional life of components well beyond the limits of other high temperature polyamides.

With higher turbo pressures, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and the use of smaller, more efficient engines driving up under-bonnet temperatures, components such as air ducts, air intake manifolds and charge air cooler end-caps are having to meet increasingly critical temperature and lifetime requirements.

By limiting thermal oxidative breakdown, the new material withstands more than 3,000 hours temperature exposure up to 230ºC with less than 15% loss in mechanical properties. It is said to outperform current high heat resins on high temperature stability as well as on weldability, weld strength and the weld’s long term heat stability. It has excellent stiffness retention at high temperatures, superior toughness, resistance to greases and oils and ease of processing, especially when compared with alternative materials such as PPS, PPA and PEI.

Research leader Wilma Nijenhuis says Diablo does not rely only on traditional antioxidants but on control of the oxidation mechanism itself. This reduces loss of mechanical performance as shown in the picture above of long term heat treated test bars.
