New infra-red absorbing colourants for use with Makrolon AG 2677 polycarbonate automotive glazing are said to allow great flexibility in colour tone and concentrations of IR absorbers.
The modular system is based on commercially available IR absorbers with very low levels of inherent colour that are compatible with the transparent polycarbonate matrix and do not compromise its high optical quality. The system’s flexibility is demonstrated by its ability to combine IR-absorbing materials with colourants to create precise absorption profiles.
Makrolon glazing equipped with these IR colourants is said to be much better at absorbing radiant heat from the sun than some glass products having the same level of optical transmission.
Makrolon AG 2677 has been specially developed for automotive glazing. Characteristics include extreme purity and high transparency, while its processing properties make it ideal for injection moulding and injection-compression moulding.
Stiffer and tougher PC+ABS
Automotive interior applications are being targeted with new fibre-reinforced PC+ABS formulations that combine high flow, stiffness and strength with good impact resistance.
Bayblend DP T88 GF-10 and DP T88 GF-20 are suited to components that experience high mechanical stress. “Our focus is on instrument panels and defroster strips, but also on armrests, centre consoles, and cup and bottle holders, which have to meet stringent requirements in terms of energy absorption,” says Bayer MaterialScience’s Hans-Jürgen Klankers. First samples are said to have been well received by automotive suppliers.
The new materials are 30 to 40% easier flowing than standard glass-reinforced PC+ABS blends and 25 to 30% stiffer. DP T88 GF-20, for example, has an elasticity modulus of 7,500 MPa. It was even possible to enhance the strength values by around 50%.
