A physical headform that can measure facial and eye impact loads has been designed for use by the US military but will also be made available for the automotive sector, writes Roger Bishop.
FOCUS (Facial and Ocular Countermeasure for Safety Headform) is a collaborative effort between Denton, Virginia Tech’s centre for Biomechanics, and the US Army Research Laboratory.
It is a modular system with the ability to add instrumentation for a variety of test scenarios such as sports and crash safety applications. It can also be retrofitted to Hybrid 50th dummies. In addition to the standard instrumentation of a Hybrid III headform, FOCUS has detailed facial sensors as well as a modular system for evaluating eye injuries.
The measurement breakthrough comprises eye injury sensors and a group of five custom, multi-axis Denton load cells created to measure impact loads to the frontal bone (forehead), maxilla (cheek), mandible (jaw), zygoma (side eye socket) and nasal bone.
