Ball-and-socket fastener allows trim demounting
01/09/2007 Email to a friend   Comment on this article
A new type of fastener based on the well-known BigHead design allows trim and panels to be demounted. A ball-and-socket construction is the key innovation of the Poppit fastener.

Poppit consists of a circular steel base plate of the familiar perforated BigHead design, with a steel ball welded to its centre. A separate, matching head, moulded in polycarbonate, incorporates a socket with three strong jaws. The two parts ‘click’ together, the balljoint allowing an optional swivel action.

The male/female Poppits are bonded into position using a two-part acrylic adhesive at suitable intervals; adhesive applied to the polycarbonate head; and the trim/panel placed in position. Support is required for 8-10 minutes, with a further final cure of 45 minutes to reach full strength. To demount, a firm pull separates the joints. When reattached, exact alignment is achieved automatically by ‘popping’ the trim/panel back into its original position.

Each 30mm Poppit resists a pull of over 5kg. A 20mm version, with a 4kg capability, completes the current range. Further sizes and load strengths will be driven by customer demand.
