Future vehicle antenna systems could be integrated into external mirrors, lowering overall system costs, thanks to a special film technology developed in Germany.
Hirschmann Car Communication says that in contrast to antenna systems installed mainly on glass, the new installation space enables the systems to be standardised for the different vehicle models of a manufacturer, which helps to reduce the development costs considerably.
Hirschmann has carried out a study in which antennas for radio, TV, mobile phone, satnav and central locking were integrated into the two external mirrors. The antennas are mounted on a film which is then either inserted in the plastic mirror housing or integrated during the injection process.
