DaimlerChrysler’s DCA (durable compact axle) system integrates axle tube, trailing arm suspension beam and air bellows support and brake carrier, reducing its overall height and allowing more volume for the trailer body. It is also said to be the lightest axle in its class.
The smooth, flowing form of the axle beam and suspension arm give the appearance of a hydroformed component but it is in fact a welded assembly. The pressed steel suspension arm halves are welded to the tubular axle component then ground. This arrangement is said to optimise force distribution and reduce stresses in the structure.
Spindles are friction welded to the tube ends and the air springs mounted on tail-ends bolted to the axle housings. Ride height is determined by different tail-ends and only one damper and air-bellows type is required for all three variants.
