Air-sprung chassis adapted to van rear end
01/11/2004 Email to a friend   Comment on this article
Continental has adapted its electronically controlled four-corner airsprung chassis for passenger cars for recreational and light commercial vehicles. It will make its debut in an Asian-produced minivan next year.

Using a new generation of modular air compressors and a closed air supply, the dedicated rear-axle application for vans and commercial vehicles has been developed to series production readiness.

The damping and suspension on vans have to be geared to the biggest payloads. This means that vehicles equipped with rear axle steel springs often lack spring travel when the vehicle is operating empty. In these conditions, when the rear wheels are further relieved by dynamic axle distribution during braking, they are barely capable of transmitting lateral and braking forces.

The airsprung rear axle provides a constant height level regardless of load, consistent spring deflection and therefore good tyre adhesion. Comfort is also enhanced considerably.

Two layouts are offered, a spring/strut or a separate spring/damper arrangement.
