Mentor Graphics has greatly extended its automotive electrical and electronic (E/E) design solutions, writes Roger Bishop.
Its acquisition of Volcano Communications has added vehicle network design to existing electrical systems and harness design. Now the company has launched a modelling and simulation tool for mechatronics subsystems, SystemVision, and has joined the AUTOSAR open standards organisation as a premium member.
It all adds up to a powerful capability in the design and analysis of the vehicle electric distribution system, including embedded system software. Volcano customers include Audi, BMW, Bosch, Visteon and Volvo.
SystemVision enables designers to model systems and components with a virtual prototype and use simulation to perform the critical analyses of electrical, mechanical, thermal and hydraulic subsystems. The software is based on a mixed-signal modelling language, VHDL-AMS, which as a vendor-independent standard language enables efficient information exchange between OEMs and suppliers, reducing communication problems with the concept of executable specifications.
Ewald Hessel, speaker ofWorking Group AK 30 of the German association for research on automobile technology (Forschungsvereinigung Automobiltechnik, FAT) within the VDA, says: “SystemVision is one of the reference simulators for AK 30, because of the language coverage and good performance.” Hessel is team leader, Engineering Methods and Tools at Hella KGaA Hueck & Co, one of SystemVision’s first customers.
Magneti Marelli Powertrain has integrated SystemVision into its ASIC development flow and says it has reduced development time for engine control custom designs by using the software in association with ModelSim.
