Chemists advance high strength composites

There is a growing trend to use dilution technology as a cost-effective route for technically demanding injection moulded applications. This technology reduces the quantity of compounded material used by diluting a concentrated long glass fibre compound with reactor polypropylene (PP) at the injection moulding stage.

To meet the needs of customers making this transition, Borealis has launched Nepol GB600HP-9502 glass fibre-reinforced PP concentrate, designed to be used in combination with a specially developed dilution PP BJ100HP reactor compound. These can be injection moulded on a standard machine fitted with metering and mixing equipment.

Through appropriate dosing of the polymers, a glass fibre content in the range of 20-40% can be achieved in the final part. Coupling of polymer and glass fibre is optimised, ensuring high stiffness and impact strength.
The development is specifically directed towards serving the automotive industry where dilution technology is widely used in the injection moulding of load-bearing parts such as front-end carriers, instrument panels and door modules.
