ELMOS Semiconductor is to introduce a new product family of sensorless commutation brushless DC motors (BLDC motors) that will have significant automotive applications.
The development work is based on having an exclusive licence for a patented method of achieving sensorless control of BLDC motors. The method allows determination of the rotor position without additional components. In contrast to common sensorless methods, it allows the function of the motor to be controlled across the whole rpm range from zero.
Both standard products and customer specific semiconductor solutions are planned.
BLDC motors are gaining significance because of their better efficiency and high reliability in comparison with other DC motors. Electromagnetic interference is also reduced because there is no brush arcing. As a result they are becoming important for designers of automatic transmissions, electrical gearing and braking systems.
