Researchers at Bayer MaterialScience have developed an automotive coating that uses the warmth of the summer sun to heal the fine abrasions and scratches that result from hand or car wash cleaning, writes Roger Bishop. They simply disappear, according to a recent technical note.
Without revealing too much about the coating’s specific properties, the scientists say that an automotive coating cannot be too yielding as it has to protect the underlying layers and needs to withstand considerable chemical stress in the form of saltwater, tree resin or bird droppings.
So along with improving the flow properties—which deliver the self-healing capability—the chemists have “tightened the molecular network” to make the coating tougher. The result, they say, is that the hardness of the coating offers protection against deeper abrasions and chipping while small scratches or ‘microfurrows’ simply disappear.
The new coating, 2K-PUR Clear Coat, is also said to be more environmentally friendly than traditional alternatives. Because it is less viscous during application, less solvent is needed.
