Anti squeak coating reaches a new low
01/04/2005 Email to a friend   Comment on this article
A new coating said to be a viable alternative to silicone-based products used on weather seals is claimed to offer new levels of noise reduction and freeze-release properties.

Called Xylan 2320, its developer, Whitford Plastics, says it is even better than the company’s own Xylan 1642 now widely used by automotive manufacturers. Improved properties are in several areas:
• An increase in mixed pot life to 48 hours, reducing application costs and waste.
• Low noise. In tests, Xylan 2320 wet random vibrations are below the 40dBA standard and dry random vibrations meet the new forthcoming 37dBA standard to be introduced this year.
• Superior noise reduction and freeze-release properties. Confirmed by coefficient-of-friction tests—the new coating has a static value of 0.10 and a dynamic value of 0.03, while standard coatings have figures just below 0.2.
In a toluene double-rub test Xylan 2320 resisted four times longer than Xylan 1642. And in the crock test that measures the adhesion of the coating to weather-stripping and its ability to withstand attack by water and the chemicals found in windscreen washes, the product was at the top of the scale.

Xylan 2320 is a two-pack coating that is easy to apply using conventional spray equipment. The coating has a maximum cure temperature of 180ºC for five minutes and a minimum cure temperature of 120ºC for 30 minutes.
