In a new formulation of hot melt technology, the instant green strength of pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) has been combined with the performance of a cross-linked silicone assembly sealant, writes Roger Bishop.
Dow Corning says the low viscosity of its HM-2510 material allows it to flow into deeper sections and achieve longer working time. Having a low elastic modulus with extremely high elongation capabilities makes it suitable for sealing plastics to materials with different coefficients of thermal expansion, such as glass, plastics and metals. Instant green strength allows parts to be moved immediately from one processing step to the next.
Automotive applications have been identified in automotive lighting, identification labelling, bonding plastic components on the chassis or under the bonnet and PC boards.
Because the material is both a silicone sealant and a PSA, it provides aggressive, long-lasting adhesion to PVC, aluminium, painted and treated wood, high performance paints, plastics and various other substrates. Service temperatures are from –45ºC to +150ºC and it is unaffected by long-term direct and indirect UV exposure.
The sealant is optimised for use with automated dispensing equipment, which creates a uniform seal for part-to-part consistency, minimises waste and clean-up and can reduce labour costs.
Dow Corning says that during 2007 creep resistance will be improved by 100% while new, already patented technologies will improve resistance to static shear, bring mechanical properties closer to standard silicone sealants and lower application temperature to perhaps 70ºC.
